Who We Are

We’re costume designers, artists, dancers, nerds, and makers - and we were so done settling for overpriced, low-quality materials that didn’t actually do the job.

After one too many fabric hauls that ended in disappointment (and unnecessary glitter everywhere), we decided it was time for something better.

So we built The Selvage Yard: a specialty costuming shop filled with the fabrics, tools, supplies, and weird little extras that actually make sense for what we do.

Whether you’re stoning a Latin dress, crafting EVA armor, costuming a show, or stitching a 16th-century gown with a very modern deadline, The Selvage Yard was built with you in mind.

We’re not here to sell you filler. We’re here to stock the stuff that helps you turn chaos, caffeine, and ambition into something incredible.

Why We Started This

Big-box craft stores rarely have what costumers actually need, and online suppliers are often overpriced, backordered, or missing that one thing your entire project suddenly depends on.

And for designers who need to feel the fabric, test the stretch, compare colors, check the drape, or figure out whether something will actually behave the way we need it to in real life... ordering from a tiny photo on a screen only gets us so far.

The Selvage Yard started as a frustration, but somewhere along the way, it became a love letter.

To the designers drafting patterns long past midnight. To the cosplayers heat-forming armor in tiny apartments. To the dancers stitching fringe between rehearsals. To the theatre people making magic happen on budgets that absolutely did not account for the amount of trim this costume apparently requires. To the historical costumers trying to make something from 1572 happen before Saturday.

And to anyone who has ever looked at a bolt of fabric and seen possibility.

We’re here to make that magic a little easier - and to stock the supplies that actually help you get it done.

Our Commitment

We want the things on our shelves to actually deserve to be there.

We know what it’s like to waste money on the wrong materials, panic-order from three different online shops and hope one of them ships in time, or realize halfway through a build that the only elastic you could find is the wrong color and is already unraveling.

We’re here to make that happen a little less often.

At The Selvage Yard, we’re committed to stocking quality supplies that actually work - for cosplayers, theatre costumers, dancers, sewists, makers, and anyone who has ever temporarily turned their living room into a costuming studio during a chaotic weekend crunch.

Our inventory is curated by people who have been on every side of the process - people who know what it takes to get something from a sketchbook to a stage, competition floor, convention hall, photoshoot, faire, or wherever your finished project is headed.

That means:

  • No fluff. No filler. Just the good stuff

  • Products we’ve actually used ourselves

  • A growing inventory shaped by what our community actually needs

  • Quality and usefulness prioritized over stocking something just for the sake of filling a shelf

  • Listening when you tell us what you wish you could find locally

We’re not trying to be everything for everyone. We’re trying to be exactly right for people like you.
